VBUG Newcastle: F# with Oliver Sturm Date: Wednesday 09 July 2008 Topic: VBUG TECHNICAL SEMINAR Overview: Taking efficiency one step further - F# Microsoft Research describes F# as "a scripted/functional/imperative/object-oriented programming language". Combining all those aspects in one language is certainly not an easy task, but they've done a good job of it. F# is interesting both as a language to actually consider for your projects and as a source of features that might make it into the mainstream .NET languages tomorrow. The session uses many examples to give you a good general overview of F#. To complement the introductory session, Oliver is going to show some more advanced samples from his talk “Data Handling in F#” and there will also be room for Q&A as well as discussion. VBUG Coventry: Securing Web Services with WCF with Chris Seary Date: Wednesday 09 July 2008 Topic: VBUG TECHNICAL SEMINAR Overview: WCF offers a strong array of tools for adding security to all boundaries of your application. Chris will guide you through implementing WCF security, and also what sort of protection is the best choice for each scenario. When is it best to use message level security (WS-Security) instead of SSL? Why use application security instead of IPSec? How do you provide integrity? Chris has answered these questions for large scale enterprise applications in government, banking and defence. The session will go into deep technical detail, and offers plenty of sample code for your own implementations. Chris Seary works as a Senior Developer for an IT and management consultancy, Charteris plc(http://www.charteris.com). He has worked with many different Microsoft technologies, and for the last few years has specialised in the security aspects of enterprise-level .NET systems. VBUG Thames Valley: How to spend more time at the pub (and other fun places!) Date: Tuesday 15 July 2008 Topic: VBUG TECHNICAL SEMINAR Overview: CSLA.NET is a business object framework that can help developers of all skill levels to build scalable, maintainable applications that adhere to industry best practices without extended delivery time. Code generation is a technique for automatically creating sections of code to a consistent standard, usually through the combination of a generic template with a specific entity model. Both techniques are beneficial in their own right but in combination offer a compelling method of quickly delivering high quality applications. In this session I will explain what CSLA.NET is all about and demonstrate how, by combining these two techniques you can free up time for other pursuits (or other projects). If you want to explore an interesting technique that encourages good architectural practice or find out what code generation is and how it can help you with repetitive tasks then come along and join in. SPEAKER BIO: Andrew Hallmark is a Technical Architect for Maritz, a performance improvement company. He's been in software development for 14 years, first programming in Clipper before becoming Microsoft certified. Having delivered solutions of all sizes in VB, ASP and even Access he now most often develops using SQL Server and .NET. Like everyone else, Andrew regularly encounters the need to deliver quality applications with short lead times. By trying to balance the investment required to learn new skills and techniques with the benefits they bring, he constantly strives to deliver cost effective solutions to customers. VBUG Manchester: Where’s my data? An intro to Spatial Queries in SQL Srv 08 Date: Thursday 24 July 2008 Topic: VBUG MANCHESTER TECHNICAL SEMINAR Overview: It is reckoned that 80-90% of data has a spatial component to it. But what do we do with it now? At best, we constrain it to postcodes. Well, that would be great if we were delivering letters, but the majority of us aren’t. In this session we look at Spatial Queries in SQL Server to see how it works and what can be done with it. Here's what Gary Short said about the session when he saw it: - "Colin MacKay's Spatial Data talk last night really rocked! If you get the chance to see it you should." Colin Angus Mackay is a software developer specialising in Microsoft technologies located in Glasgow, Scotland. He is a Member of the Institution of Analysts and Programmers, Member of the British Computer Society, a Microsoft MVP (C#), a Microsoft Certified Solutions Developer, a Core Member of Scottish Developers, Code Project MVP for four years running and while not involved in software related pursuits is an amateur photographer, cyclist, map maker and is also the Vice President of Education for South Side Speakers, the Glasgow South Side Branch of Toastmasters International. And if all that wasn’t enough he is also organising Developer Day Scotland. Venue: TBC Start Time: 6:30 PM Price: FREE More Info: click here
